Frequently Asked Questions

F.A.Q.
If I'm not officially accepted yet, what am I allowed to do in the OOC communities?
You are perfectly welcome to ask questions or comment to posts in [community profile] damned_lounge even if you haven't been accepted yet. However, we do not allow potential players to post with journals for characters who have not officially been accepted, and unless otherwise noted, non-players may not vote in any of the administrative polls.

As a potential applicant, what is the best way to contact a mod if I have questions about my application?
We prefer to be emailed at damned.mods[at]gmail[dot]com so that we have a record of the question and having answered it. Leaving a comment on this post is also fine, if you don't mind the question being public.

I've submitted an application, but it's been a while and I haven't heard back. What should I do?
We do our best to list the status of applications in our inbox over here. However, sometimes we do fall behind. If it's been a week and you haven't received a response, please feel free to contact one of the mods (on plurk, with a DW PM, etc.) to inquire about your application status.

Two questions!

1) How long does stuff stay on the bulletin board? Meaning, if you got someone bound and determined to read back through everything posted there ever, how far back would they be able to go?

2) For Wonka, when he eventually gets to the Kitchen: do the appliances there actually work? Or do they stop running the same way the lights stop running?

[identity profile] damned-info.livejournal.com 2009-01-30 10:20 am (UTC)(link)
So sorry for the late, late reply!

1) As of now, a rule for it hasn't been set, but from now on we're going to have it that each day the bulletin is removed of all messages by the time the morning of the next day comes.

2) Seeing how things like computers and TVs can be turned on at night, I don't see why not. Though chances are that a lot of the appliances would be unplugged and stored away, and he'd have to search for the outlets.

Hope that helps!

Schedule question!

I'm noticing some scheduling oddities ever since mid-"Tuesday" (last game day, about a month ago) when compared to the calendar on this page. Specifically, every shift seems to be getting an automatic one-day extension. Is this an official change to the shift timing, or is it specific to therapy days (even with breakfast and dinner being affected)? Or is Landel just being lazy?
ext_40302: (Zero mari da)

[identity profile] revolves.livejournal.com 2009-02-18 09:53 pm (UTC)(link)
The therapy shifts are all extended one RL day, but the meals taking longer than they should is just kind of... coincidental, I think. :)

[identity profile] vaticnostrum.livejournal.com 2009-03-06 11:05 am (UTC)(link)
I've run into this problem a couple of times now, so I figure I may as well ask here. Is there a baseline for how fast injuries take to heal in Landel's? Like something minor (shallow cuts) = a day or two, something extensive (characters getting knifed, limbs broken) = four to six?

It seems like currently wounds take as long to heal as players think works, but it can be off-putting to see one character take three days to heal a bad cut, while another gets stabbed in the gut and is walking around fine a day later. It's also extra confusing when you toss characters with healing abilities into the mix.

Possibly a little obsessive over small details, but as one of mine has apparently developed a habit of attracting violent types, I'm suddenly finding I need to know how long he would take to heal. ^^;

[identity profile] damned-info.livejournal.com 2009-03-07 06:27 am (UTC)(link)
You're definitely right about it being vague. We're planning to write up a "Healing at Landel's" info page eventually, but for the moment, the estimations that you laid out are pretty accurate, so go ahead with that!

Additionally, if you think anyone is having their character heal at an unfairly fast rate, please let us know in reports/concerns post!

Newb questions and an annoying question, sorry. ;A;

1. Are there windows in any of the rooms? I keep wanting to say, "Mele stared out the window" but I'm not sure. ^^;;

2. Orderlies can be requested, yes?

3. Um, um. If Mele were to dream before going to breakfast, is posting to the intercom post before she goes to breakfast okay? Or should I post that dream into breakfast along with what she does AT breakfast? Sorry for the nitpicking micromanagement-playing, but I kinda wanted to have a situation where, even if she doesn't remember the dream, it'd affect her mood for the rest of the day. 8D;; Posting to the intercom post is a little more private, is all. ^^;

[identity profile] mugenreppa.livejournal.com 2009-03-10 02:06 am (UTC)(link)
Moar newb questions (that I forgot the first time around OTL)

4. This isn't going to be an issue for Mele for a long time (if ever) but just for completion's sake--when a character has his/her own outfit, is he still wearing it in the morning? Or does he wake up in the uniform gray, and his own outfit is returned to the closet? Asking because I think I've seen both cases happening ._.

5. Are the gray shirts, etc. respawning?

6. ...I tag every entry Mele is in, right? (~gets punched for new level of newb~) Don't want to um. overstep my boundaries...or something. ^^;;;;

Random question - would there be anything in the upstairs kitchen that could be used to sharpen knives?

Yes! It would be something manual rather than anything electric, though.

Okay, quick question and I'm not sure if this is answered somewhere or not, but I couldn't find it. :x

I'm still not really sure what happens to items from NightShift- do we have to get them back to our rooms to keep them? Or do the items we're carrying get magically transported back to our rooms when we do?

And one more if the items do get magically transported to the rooms with us- Scarecrow was still carrying Mele's flashlight in his hands at the end of the night. Would he still have it? Should this be something he should concern himself with returning, because he would if he has it? Okay, that was two questions, but an inquiring mind wants to know! D:

Haven't seen this anywhere but in the case of say weapons, high-tech power suits, personal affects, military uniforms, etc, that new characters usually have in their possession in their canon, do they still have them upon waking up/arriving in Landel's? Or are those items taken away? Could they also be reattained in game?

To be even more specific, what would happen to Terry McGinnis's Batsuit if he gets accepted into the game and can I get it back in-game if he doesn't have it?

[identity profile] damned-info.livejournal.com 2009-04-02 10:51 am (UTC)(link)
Characters are generally stripped of everything when they first arrive at Landel's -- except that in some cases they can keep a small personal item if it isn't advantageous in any way. I'm assuming you know about Batman stuff, so as an example: Two-Face got to keep his coin.

There is a way for characters to get their canon outfits back, though. During October (which is [livejournal.com profile] damned's birthday month) we have something called the Oktoberfest. Basically, if you write a [livejournal.com profile] damned-related fic (over 2,000 words) before the end of that month, you can choose for one of your characters to get their outfit back. However, the outfit won't have any advantageous perks added - that is, the Batsuit's utility belt, flying capabilities, etc. would be gone. It'd just be an outfit.

Does that help?

MOAR BUGGING. (I feel bad doing this during app cycle though. Sorry! D: ) I also get the feeling that part of this has probably been asked before, but I couldn't find anything. T__T

Jaime wants to try various things with the radios and possibly the intercom, sooo...

1. Is there any apparent controls/speakers/whatever for the intercom? Anything he could get at wires through would be what he's looking for.

2. Uh, this is fail on my part, as one of Jaime's abilities that I forgot to pay attention to involves communications and stuff. Annnnd now he wants to try using it so I have to come up with an idea of wtf it's going to be able to do here.

Basically he's been hearing about Jack and Jill and the radios, and want to try using them for communication with the Scarab acting as a 'boost'. He'll have to get his hands on a two-way or something first, which is slowing him down, but if/when he gets one, he's going to be trying the following:

a) Getting the Scarab to boost the signal enough to get a message out to someone, he doesn't care who, he just wants to see if it can be done.

b) Seeing if he can contact Jill via the radio.

Failing that, he'll probably be trying c) getting the Scarab to 'tune in' to the two-way, so that he could give them out to others and work as a sort of superhero switchboard.

Those are his main ideas, and I'm totally okay with 'lolNO' being the answer to all of them. :'D Or equally coming up with some kind of huge ass cost for doing even something tiny, like splitting headaches for a couple of days/inability to use the Scarab for the rest of the night for just getting the Scarab to pick up the right frequency. Whatever you guys think would work.

*FLAILS* SORRY FOR THE TL;DR AND DIFFICULT, THINKY CHARACTERS BEING DIFFICULT AND THINKY. AND SORRY FOR SPRINGING THIS DURING APPS. ;__;

[identity profile] damned-info.livejournal.com 2009-06-03 08:21 am (UTC)(link)
Late reply is later than late, but...

1. There are intercoms in each room, but they were set into the walls which means that actually getting to them would take a lot of effort since the wall would kind of have to be bashed in or something along those lines.

2. Uhh, not sure that he would be able to get a message out to anyone who isn't in the institute, Jill included, but he might be able to do something with the two-way radios. We're not really sure what you mean about having him 'tune in,' so if you could explain that a little more then it would be helpful.

I PROBABLY HAVE MORE QUESTIONS THAN THIS, but uh, these are the only random ones I remember thinking up at dumb times. :[

1. Okay, this is less random and more plot-y, but about doctors being thrown out in regular shifts… I know I’ve seen a few appear during the field trip in Doyleton since that’s where they’re supposedly living (I think?) but say they start interacting with a character in a shop or something. Would it be all right for them to buy a patient a benign kind of gift like a discman, candy, etc.?

2. This actually doesn’t apply to me, I’ve just never been quite sure about it. On characters with electrical powers: are they able to interfere with the lights or anything like that and power them back on? I’m going with ‘no’, but I’m unclear on the details.

3. ARE THERE MARSHMALLOWS IN THE KITCHEN?

[identity profile] damned-info.livejournal.com 2009-06-03 08:22 am (UTC)(link)
1. Yes, that should be okay! So long as it's benign. :)

2. Uhh, it kind of depends on the character and what powers the person worked out with us when they applied, but... generally, I'd say that maybe they could power on the lights in one room, but probably only for a short while and it would really drain them.

3. SURE, WHY NOT.

Very specific question, instead of a general one:

Subaru is still healing from getting nommed by Heat, but his face/eye should probably be just about healed by next dayshift (day 5 of the healing process--I was going to have his back/missing-kidney-area take until day 6 or so), so I was wondering... will he be given some sort of glass or acrylic eye to replace the one he lost? He's a very well-behaved and gentle patient, not the type to use it for pranks or anything, and I would prefer that to a patch if at all possible.

Hello, sorry to bother you. ^_^;

Scourge is over at this end (http://damned-maps.livejournal.com/3355.html) of the institute. He's about to be in North Hallway 2-B, then will go through Decon and to the chemical storage room. For the record, he's got heightened auditory and olfactory abilities.

I'm wondering if he'd hear anything (the animals in the kennel, if they're making growly or scratching noises) or smell anything (chemicals in the decon/lab area/chemical storage room) noteworthy. If the chemicals are sealed up tight he probably wouldn't notice anything, but if there's scentworthy residue he would notice it.

[identity profile] damned-info.livejournal.com 2009-06-03 08:31 am (UTC)(link)
No problem!

Hmm, he would probably be able to hear the weird growls/moans/general noises that the animals are making, yes! All of the chemicals are probably sealed and sterilized, though, so he'd probably just smell cleaning fluids and stuff like that.

Okay, questions:

Lenny is hoping to find his Polaroid camera and some film in the Patient Possessions room. Last I check, that room didn't have a description. Is there just a box with his name on it or something in there?

Also, granted he gets it back, would the nurses take pity on him and allow him to use it during the day, since realistically, the dark lighting at night would not make for good photographs it'd be really helpful for his rehabilitation or some other excuse?

Thanks in advance! :)

I have a question about supplies and timewarps. I have a character who wants a particular item and has been to the storage rooms, like, 34840598 times to get it, but has been routinely beaten by someone who will raid the entire room, taking limited numbers of things with them. I'm not sure if I've heard this before, but in these situations, is it within the rules to pretend they came in at a different time, or do we play it out as it is?

[identity profile] damned-info.livejournal.com 2009-08-10 09:39 am (UTC)(link)
Sorry for the uhhh insanely late reply! D8

Someone else has suggested that we make a post that lists who took what from popular areas and how many of each thing, etc.; now that Court's back, we can probably start talking stuff like that out and making a post of looted items that people can respond to.

In the meantime, though, if someone has the looted the entire area, it's probably okay to, yeah, say your character came in a bit earlier if you just want them to get a few particular items. :3

[identity profile] lady-angelina.livejournal.com 2009-06-07 04:35 am (UTC)(link)
This is probably a no-brainer, but! Barring creating new top-level posts for NS after it has passed, how long is it okay to continue an old backthread? Is there a time limit on that?

I am asking because no thanks to my phail my fourth shift thread never really got off the ground, yet Allie is game to backthread it with me if it's okay. I figured that it probably is, but we thought to check with you gals first. :3

Thanks so much in advance!

[identity profile] damned-info.livejournal.com 2009-08-10 09:44 am (UTC)(link)
Sorry for the huge delaaaaaaaay! T_T But, for future reference, there is absolutely no time limit so long as you keep your character's nightshift findings consistent with their daytime activities. (Seriously, I once backthreaded for about three months. But then, that's me. >>;) You can't, however, make new location posts once Nightshift is over.

I have to ask as it may benefit potential applicants:

How strict are the age restrictions for potential characters? I know 9 and under are not allowed as per the application guidelines, but I recall an older version stating that "demonic type" children of the restricted age group may be permitted under certain circumstances.

The reason I ask is because I am considering a 9-year-old (Ushiromiya Maria from Umineko no Naku Koro ni) as a future character. I am wondering if she might be allowed into the game (provided the application is up to standard) despite the age for the following reasons: (1) She's considered a witch (a supernatural being) from the time line I'm taking her, (2) the series is a horror/mystery visual novel and details disturbingly graphic murders, including her own (choking/implied poisoning), (3) she has been involved in these murders (repeatedly killing her own mother by crushing, tearing her limb from limb, etc. using magical power or witnessing the death of others), and (4) is highly familiar with the supernatural and supernatural beings (witches, demons, goat butlers, etc.) Comparatively, Maria's experience in her own canon is harsher than Landel's, and anything the RP setting may offer will fit with this character given she comes from a horror genre.

So basically, would these reasons be substantial to allow this 9-year-old into consideration for acceptance, or does this rule carry no exceptions?

[identity profile] damned-info.livejournal.com 2009-08-10 09:46 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, given the circumstances and the "demonic" caveat (and the fact that the canon is uhh.... yeah), we think that's perfectly fine. XD

Of course, who knows if this still applies since it's been so long since you posted this jshfakjsdhfs sorry! T_T

Two things:

1) THIS MIGHT SEEM LIKE A STUPID QUESTION, BUT. Tyki Mikk already had visitors last in-game Sunday, and I was required to think of some stuff for those visitors in order for it to work. Anyway, I believe that shift had been prior to the rule of getting the "real life"-story approved. I already had sent an email a while ago, but I haven't received an answer yet so before I bother you again I thought I should ask.

Anyway, when you already had a "real life"-story for your character before that rule had been created, are you still required to ask for approval? Changing things would lead to some contradictions after all...especially if the character in question already had doctor and visitor shifts.

2) On the Taken Characters list, "Disney's The Lion King" -> "Scar", my own name is also listed as Scar. ^^; At Tyki and Tenzen it's listed as Sam, and at the contact list it's listed as Samantha. SORRY IF I SEEM REALLY PICKY OR ANYTHING BUT I JUST NOTICED. ^^; And I don't know where else to post this.

[identity profile] damned-info.livejournal.com 2009-08-10 09:54 am (UTC)(link)
Sorry for the super late reply!

1) Ah, crap, we have a bunch of those backlogged that we need to take care of. Since today is Sunday in-game, we'll probably be sending a bunch of those back before the visitor shifts. However, regardless of whether we get back to you or not, we won't require you to change anything you've already established. :3

2) AH CRAP SORRY D8 will fix that right now!

apping question

[identity profile] phase5arachne.livejournal.com 2009-06-20 10:11 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm a potential new applicant and I need to clear something up before I go any farther with my application.

I'm writing an app for Yoite from Nabari no Ou. This is all fine and dandy except that he's a hermaphrodite, although his level of... hermaphrodite-ness is never really stated in canon. Personally, I think that from the waist up, he's a guy and from the waist down, he's a she which is how I'd like to have him at Damned. Don't remember what it's called right now. Anyway, a lot of his Issues come from this and I don't really want to take that away. Which brings me to my question.

Would you mind terribly if I kept him as a hermaphrodite? And instead of having the nurses/doctors flail over this, I'd like to have them treat Yoite as a girl ("You're such a lovely girl! Sort of... flat-chested but nothing plastic-surgery can't fix!") since all his canonmates call Yoite a 'he'... If it would be alright?

[identity profile] scarletspeedstr.livejournal.com 2009-06-23 10:20 am (UTC)(link)
Not a mod, but seeing app cycle is fast approaching, if you don't get an answer before then, you could always keep it and write about your reasoning why in the app? Then if the mods do have any issues, they can talk it over with you and you won't have delayed or missed out on the upcoming cycle. :)

And as someone who's had to talk out things like power issues a couple of times, I can vouch for them being very patient with that. ^^

Okay, I have a question about everybody's favourite subject: the fourth wall.

So the thing is that the Marvel universe is supposedly taking place in our world. And they very frequently reference other real life TV shows, comics, books, movies, celebrities, etc. But it gets a bit sticky, because Spider-Man is a huuuuuuuuuuge world-wide phenomena, and is blatantly referenced in plenty of other stories and whatnot. So what happens when Peter references something that references him?

Is that even allowed? Do we get to say that this particular piece of media still exists in their world, just without the reference to that world? For example, I've already made a mistake by claiming that Peter has read the Animorphs and later finding out that they talk about Spider-Man in the books (THIS IS WHY I SHOULD READ/WATCH STUFF BEFORE CITING IT, GUH). I just figured they were the kind of books he read as a kid (and they were big during the time he supposedly grew up in), and now it's blown up in my face. Is it okay to assume that the Animorphs series exists in his world, just without the mention of Spider-Man? Or like the Kill Bill movie, would the bit about Spider-Man's identity just be omitted from Bill's monologue at the end of volume two?

And to make it even more confusing, they make offhand, very very vague remarks about Batman a few times in the comics: "You were like Catwoman!" or "Who's her father? Batman?". But Marvel's had a few crossovers in the past where they just pass it off as them living in the same world all along, and yet here it could also be that Batman is fictional. Considering the plethora of Batman characters in Damned, if they're fictional, Peter would recognize them. Instantly. But if they're real he might not know them at all - and this could extend to any member of the DC universe. Should I consult the players on this, or just you guys, or just go with whatever feels right?

And I am so very sorry for springing this on you so close to apps. I can wait for an answer, there's nothing detrimental yet that involves this, but...yeah. May need it for future reference? Thanks in advance. @_@

Okay. I totally forgot to mention this in the app except in the history portion (my fail, it is showing), but Jun has a watch that he never ever takes off in canon. I have a question. I'm considering apping someone next period, but the issue is that their face is always entirely covered. Now, I do have a physical description and picture of what they look like underneath, but in canon for the character, being without the covering would not happen. How would this even out? I noticed that for example, with Kakashi, he has a medical mask, but for the entire face/head to be covered, it becomes a little more difficult. Any words of wisdom on this? =/

Er, well, who exactly is the character and in what capacity/context is their face covered? Just so we can get a better idea before advising. :X

This is somewhat belated in my case, but it didn't even occur to me to ask until sometime after the fact:

During DS, do the nurses/orderlies, erm, accompany the patients into the restrooms? XD; I know they're not all on suicide watch or anything like that, but I didn't know if Landel's did this differently from an ordinary hospital, where they generally do give you privacy there. XD;;; (And I don't know how a mental health hospital handles this sort of thing.)

Thanks in advance!

They would probably go into the bathroom with them, but not into the actual stall or anything. Sorry for the late response! D:

Two quick questions

[identity profile] krakenguard.livejournal.com 2009-10-02 02:18 am (UTC)(link)
Question no. 1: Is there any way i could role play as someone that isn't from the character roster? Say for example: I wanted to play as either Gothmog from Lord of the Rings: Return of the King or Jolly Roger from Pirates of the Caribbean Online. Is there any way that i could role play as one of those characters?

Question no. 2: Would it be okay if i tried my hand at making a fanfic based on this? ^_^

I'm not a mod, but let me try and help you out a little.

First, there isn't really a character roster. There's a taken list, which has characters that are already in play and thus can't be apped, and then there's a request list which contains characters that players already in the game would like to see people app. You can app people that aren't on this list. It's mostly just to help give potential players ideas.

Second, you'd need a fair amount of background information on your characters - enough that you can complete the app using all canon facts with little speculation. If the character is really, really minor, there's a good chance the app would be more speculation than anything, which would make it too close to an original character with a canon name. If you have a pre-established background and you can justify them being in this setting (and they're old enough) then you can app anyone from any fandom.

I can't really answer question 2, but players write fanfics for their characters in the game all the time.

Yeah, quick bulletin question

Are the staff aware of what the cooking club really is? Because I've got a character who's just gotten some metals and wants to get them made into a weapon. So basically, would he be able to say just outright say "I want to meet with the cooking club" or would he have to code that to "I want to meet the [codeword for cooking club]"?

Disclaimer: I'm not a mod, although I can probably give my two cents' worth based on my observations. (Mods, plz to thwap me if I'm wrong here. XD; )

It doesn't look like it's mandatory to add other character journals to your character's Friends list, although it's recommended because some characters do regularly write in their journals ICly. But there have been character journals that didn't friend anyone, and there are a number of others that just do the Friend Add thing only once, after they are first accepted, and then never update their Friends lists afterwards.

Personally, I keep my character's Friends list up-to-date, but that's only because I have a couple of Friends-only entries that contain contact information and other material that I'd rather not have public. My character himself only ICly uses his journal to keep track of various notes, but I do like reading other characters' journal entries on his Friends page.

In short, it appears to be personal preference more than anything else. From what it looks like, it's really up to you whether you add other character journals to your character's Friends list, so I daresay that you'd be fine in not adding anyone.

Just be aware that other players will most likely add your character's journal, so if the Friends-of list is an issue for you, you might need to ask the mods specifically if they would not add your character's username to the Friend Add list. But even if they agreed, some players, like myself, go by [livejournal.com profile] damned's current member list, not the Friend Add list, so you might still get people adding you regardless. About the only thing I can think of in that case would be to post a note in your character journal's profile, and maybe an entry in your character's journal, letting folks know of your wishes. It's not entirely foolproof, but at least you'd get the word out.

Sorry for the rambliness of this. D: Hope this all made sense. (And again, this is based on what I have seen; it's possible that you may get a different answer from the mods.)
